The active configuration currently in RAM is the running configuration. It represents the settings the device is using right now and is where any changes you make are stored immediately. When you edit the configuration, those edits live in the running-config. The startup configuration, which resides in non-volatile memory, is loaded into RAM at boot to form the initial running configuration, and saving the device’s configuration typically copies the running-config to the startup-config so changes persist after a reboot. The other terms aren’t the in-use, memory-resident configuration.
